MUSIC PROGRAM
VOCAL TRAINING
Students work closely with their coach to determine vocal range, ability and style and are given the option to explore all genres of music. Vocal students will not only learn how to sing the song with proper technique and dynamic interest, they will also learn how to entertain an audience and perform the song. This is accomplished by coaching the student on how to act the song, creating blocking, using facial expressions, advising the appropriate wardrobe for the piece, microphone technique and full body involvement. At IMPAC our fundamental foundation for coaching our students is based on Speech Level Singing. After discovering the singer’s goals, range and style, we then execute specific exercises and recommend repertoire that is appropriate for that individual student based on what he or she is seeking to accomplish. In taking more of a “tailor-made” approach, we find that students progress at a much more accelerated rate since they are not subjected to a “one size fits all” approach. |
What is Mix??
In order for any stringed instrument to function efficiently two elements must be present: one, the vibration of the string creating the pitch, and two, the resonance of the instrument creating tone. Like a piano, violin, guitar, harp, cello, viola, etc, the voice is a stringed instrument and depends on these two functions for proper vocalization. When the vocal folds come together, the vibration between them creates a pitch depending on the length, thickness, and tension of the vocal folds. This pitch resonates throughout the body, creating the tone of that pitch.
Both of these elements were given equal importance in the original and pure bel canto technique. However, in the late 19th century there was a split within the bel canto world. One group continued on as “bel canto,” focusing more on the resonant portion of the technique and the movement of the resonance behind the soft palate. The other group focused more on the vibration portion of the technique, calling itself “forward singing.” The bel canto group is considered by many today as the style of “classical” singing, and the forward singing has developed into what is more commonly known as “belt” or “broadway belt” singing.
In Mix, we desire to bring the two elements fully back together. “Behind the soft palate” accesses the “head voice” and the “forward singing” brings the vocal folds fully together and accesses the “chest voice.” By mixing the chest and head voice you receive the full benefits of “both voices”: the natural and powerful sound of the chest voice, and the beauty and range of the head voice. As a singer learns to sing using both of these resonances and trains the vocal folds to stay together, it is possible to vocalize smoothly and evenly from one register to the next. The relationship of the two elements working together will create an even, smooth vocalization and, as a result, eliminates the “breaks” in the voice. The “break” is the passagio (passage) that occurs in most singers while attempting to vocalize from one register to the next. The “break” is a common complaint among vocalists. Mix, a balanced and healthy approach to singing, eliminates the “break” in the voice.
Depending on how these two resonances are “mixed,” a variety of sounds can be created and all styles of music can be accommodated. A sound that is natural and unaffected throughout the entire vocal range can be used in all styles of singing

PIANO LESSONS
Students will learn sight-reading, ear training, form and analysis, dynamics, scales, theory, piano vocabulary and much more. Our coaches are well versed in all methods of curriculum including: Bastien, Alfred, Faber, and Suzuki. We feel that it is of the utmost importance that students take part in choosing their performance pieces and we are happy to accommodate whatever that musical genre may be. Students are much more likely to be more diligent in practicing if they feel a sense of ownership over their song choice.
For decades, scientists have studied how music can impact the ability for a student to learn and retain information, and scientists have even studied whether or not music had a physical impact on the brain itself. While scientists continue to study the impact music has on learning, there is no doubt that the effect music has on students is a powerful one.
If you or your child is considering taking music lessons, voice lessons or studying music, you should know a little about the benefits music offers.
How Music Effects Learning
In many ways learning music is much like learning a language. For students, learning how to understand music, read music or play an instrument can actually change the brain and impact other areas of learning. Numerous scientific studies suggest that the impact music has on the brain begins with connections brain cells make during musical training – connections that aid and assist other forms of communication including speech, language and reading. In other words, learning music is a form of exercise for the brain.

DRUMS LESSONS
Our drum instructors will teach beginner, intermediate and advanced Drum fundamentals, as well as jazz, funk, blues and many other styles. Drum language can be complex and our instructors will challenge any drummer with a wide variety of technical exercises designed to improve your speed and comfort. All drummers may bring in their favorite drum parts to learn in their lessons and theory is encouraged. You do not have to purchase a drum kit to take lessons. Beginning students can learn with a drum pad and sticks for about $40.00. Students use our drum set at their lessons and do not have to bring anything except their drum sticks and a notebook. We also offer Percussion Lessons, which is a wonderful addition to any school band program, rock band, or worship band.
GUITAR LESSONS
Our guitar teachers teach beginner, intermediate and advanced guitar lessons on electric and acoustic guitars. Beginner students can expect to work on chords, simple songs and melodies, sight reading, and theory. We balance musicianship and fun by making sure that each lesson you are challenged with a new technical or theory concept, but always end with something fun such as your favorite riff or song. We use a variety of guitar method books to accomplish this and encourage students to bring CDs or their iPod to their lesson to learn their favorite tunes. Our teachers can even help you with guitar repair: such as the set up of your guitar or replacing your strings!
